ENVIRONMENTAL

At Press Metal, we recognise the pressing need to address climate change and its profound impact on our planet and communities. We continuously strive to minimise our ecological footprint and protect the world by balancing corporate growth with our sustainability efforts. We are committed to constantly be vigilant and manage our environmental impacts, particularly across key material areas, namely climate change, air emissions, energy, waste, material stewardship, water and effluents, and biodiversity.

Our approach towards environmental sustainability is guided by our Environmental Policy, Environmental Mission Statement, Energy Management Policy and Sustainability Policy which encapsulates Press Metal’s principles towards managing the environmental impacts. Besides that, we further solidify our climate change commitments by institutionalising our Climate Change Policy and Climate Targets.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Press Metal recognises the critical importance of addressing climate change across its operations and value chain. We remain committed to adapting our business model to evolving climate-related challenges while continuously pursuing opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency.

Our climate management practices are aligned with industry standards, emerging best practices, and peer developments, while supporting Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and internationally recognised frameworks. Guided by the Group’s Climate Change Strategy, Net-Zero Roadmap, and Climate Action Plan, we integrate climate mitigation and adaptation measures to reduce GHG emissions, prioritise key initiatives, and support our transition to a lower-carbon economy while balancing growth opportunities.

Climate Targets

Reduction of GHG emissions intensity (Scope 1, 2 & 3) by 30% from the 2020 baseline

Net-zero emissions by 2050

Notes:

  1. GHG emissions intensity 2020 baseline: 10.3 tCO₂e per tonne of aluminium
  2. Targets for reduction of Scope 3 GHG emissions intensity include Categories 1, 3, and 4 only
ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Energy management across Press Metal is guided by our Environmental Policy, Environmental Mission Statement, and Energy Management Policy. It is important to use energy efficiently and continuously identify opportunities to shift energy source from non-renewable to renewable energy, to achieve operational GHG emissions reduction.

We are committed to increasing the use of renewable energy across our operations and reducing reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources where technically and commercially feasible. By continuously improving our energy performance, we strengthen our long-term competitiveness while supporting a more sustainable, low-carbon future.

AIR EMISSIONS

Press Metal is dedicated to management of our environmental impacts including air emissions. We set and implement internal standards and relevant initiatives to mitigate our air emissions impact and ensure the air emissions meet the applicable regulations in the jurisdictions where we operate. We closely monitor air emissions from our manufacturing operations to comply with the permissible air quality limits stipulated in local authority standards and regulations.

MATERIAL STEWARDSHIP

At Press Metal, material stewardship is embedded across our manufacturing operations through disciplined material management, process optimisation, and consistent operational controls. Our approach combines by-product recovery with circular reintegration, focusing on the reuse of both internally generated process scrap and externally sourced recycled aluminium that meet defined material specifications and quality requirements. Through these practices, we enhance material yield, reduce reliance on primary raw materials, and extend the lifecycle of aluminium within our operations, supporting greater resource efficiency and circularity.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Press Metal's waste management approach is guided by the Environmental Mission Statement and our comprehensive waste management practice encompasses several vital elements; centred around designing and managing products and processes that minimise waste volume, promote conservation, and recover waste resources.

At Press Metal, we are committed to effective waste management by implementing the 4Rs Approach: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. The 4Rs Approach actively accentuates reducing waste generation at source, re-using, recycling and recovering valuable by-products and processing our operational waste in a responsible manner from cradle-to-gate.

Waste Diversion Targets

Achieve 95% waste diversion rate by 2026

Zero (0) landfill waste by 2030

WATER & EFFLUENTS

Water is a shared resource and it is important to the communities in which we operate in. Acknowledging that, Press Metal has taken a proactive stance towards responsible water resource management across our operations.

Our commitment to managing water resources is outlined in our Environmental Mission Statement. Our Water Management Plan guides effective water utilisation through established action plans, encompassing facility enhancements, process optimisations, monitoring, inspections and educational initiatives throughout our manufacturing facilities to optimise water efficiency and identify areas for improvement.

Water Withdrawal Target

Reduction of water withdrawal intensity by 10%

Note:

From the 2016 baseline for water withdrawal intensity: 3.1 m3 per tonne of aluminium

BIODIVERSITY

As a responsible organisation, Press Metal is committed to managing our environmental impact across our value chain activities. Most of our manufacturing facilities are located within designated industrial zones, where land-use planning and environmental controls are focused on industrial activities. Our smelters undertake individual Environmental Impact Assessments (“EIAs”) to assess and identify any adverse environmental impacts before the initiation of any planning and construction activities, as well as during the operational phase of their facilities, where required by regulatory authorities. Similarly, our China entities adhere to the law of the People’s Republic of China on EIAs.

None of the Group’s sites are located within or adjacent to World Heritage Sites, protected areas or key biodiversity areas, which reduces our exposure to sensitive ecological zones.
